How to Tackle Quantitative Analysis in FRM Part 1

Is Quantitative Analysis Difficult in FRM Part 1?

It can certainly feel difficult in the beginning, particularly if you haven't studied mathematics or statistics for some time.

But you don't need to look at the entire subject at once.

A large part of the difficulty comes from seeing unfamiliar terminology—random variables, hypothesis testing, regression, time series and machine learning—and assuming that everything is highly mathematical.

Once these concepts are explained intuitively, the subject starts becoming much more manageable.

Instead of beginning with:

"How do I memorize all these formulas?"

Start with:

"What is this concept actually trying to tell me?"

That's the approach we recommend for FRM Quantitative Analysis.

How Is FRM Quantitative Analysis Structured?

Instead of looking at Quant as a long list of individual chapters, you can broadly divide your preparation into five major areas:

Area

What Are We Trying to Understand?

Probability

Uncertainty and random outcomes

Hypothesis Testing

What conclusions can we draw from data?

Regression

How are different variables related?

Time Series

How does financial data behave over time?

Machine Learning

How can data be used to identify patterns and make predictions?

Suddenly, Quant doesn't look like dozens of disconnected concepts.

It becomes five broad ideas that you can learn one at a time.

1. Probability and Random Variables

This is where your Quantitative Analysis journey begins.

Probability gives you the foundation for understanding uncertainty—which is ultimately at the heart of risk management.

You then move into random variables, where you start understanding how uncertain outcomes can be represented and analysed.

These initial chapters are important because many concepts you encounter later in FRM build upon this foundation.

And rather than explaining the entire chapter here, you can actually watch the complete lectures for yourself.

This is a complete chapter from our FRM Part 1 Quantitative Analysis preparation.

If you've been worried about Quant, start here.

Watch the class and see whether the subject feels as difficult as it initially appeared.

Once you're comfortable with probability, continue with the complete Random Variables chapter.

These aren't short promotional clips. They are actual chapter lectures, so you can experience how Quantitative Analysis is taught before moving further into the subject.

2. Hypothesis Testing

Once the foundations are clear, Quant starts moving towards statistical decision-making.

Hypothesis testing may sound technical, but the basic idea is straightforward:

We have some information from a sample. What can we reasonably conclude from it?

This section introduces you to the logic behind testing claims using data.

Understanding why we are performing a statistical test makes the topic much easier than simply trying to remember different procedures.

3. Linear and Multiple Regression

Regression is another important area of Quantitative Analysis.

The basic idea is to understand relationships between variables.

Does one variable help explain movements in another?

You begin with linear regression and then extend the same thinking to multiple regression, where several variables may be considered together.

There are calculations involved, of course, but regression becomes considerably easier once you understand what the model is actually trying to accomplish.

Understand the relationship first. Learn the mathematics behind it second.

4. Time Series Analysis

The next broad area is Time Series Analysis.

Financial data doesn't exist in isolation.

Interest rates, stock prices, volatility and many other financial variables are observed repeatedly through time.

Time-series analysis helps us understand how such data behaves and how historical observations may help us analyse or forecast future behaviour.

The terminology can initially appear complicated, but the underlying questions are quite intuitive:

Is there a pattern in the data?

Does the past tell us something about the future?

How stable is that relationship over time?

Understand the questions first, and the models become much easier to learn.

5. Machine Learning

Machine learning may sound like the most intimidating part of Quantitative Analysis.

But you don't need to approach it as though you're becoming a machine-learning engineer.

From an FRM perspective, the objective is to understand the important concepts and how these techniques can be applied to financial data.

By the time you reach this section, you've already developed a foundation in probability, statistics, regression and data analysis.

Machine learning therefore becomes an extension of the same broader question:

How can we use data to identify patterns and make better predictions or classifications?

The Best Way to Approach FRM Quant

The biggest change you can make is to stop approaching Quant as a formula book.

Take one area at a time:

Probability → Hypothesis Testing → Regression → Time Series → Machine Learning

First understand what the concept is trying to accomplish.

Then understand how it works.

Then solve questions.

You will obviously need calculations and formulas for the FRM examination, but they become much easier to work with when you understand the reasoning behind them.

This is particularly important if you're returning to studies after several years or don't come from a highly quantitative background.

If you're still wondering:

"Will I actually be able to understand FRM Quant?"

Don't decide by simply looking at the syllabus.

Try learning it.

Start with the two complete classes we've provided above:

Fundamentals of Probability

Random Variables

Give yourself some time to understand the concepts.

You may find that Quantitative Analysis is much less intimidating when someone explains why something works before asking you to remember how to calculate it.

That's also the philosophy behind how we teach FRM at Vardeez.

Final Takeaways

FRM Part 1 Quantitative Analysis doesn't need to be approached as one large mathematical subject.

Break it into five broad areas:

Probability → Hypothesis Testing → Regression → Time Series → Machine Learning

Learn each block conceptually and then move towards questions and calculations.

Most importantly, don't decide that Quant is difficult before you've actually tried to understand it.

Watch the two free chapters above.

If Probability and Random Variables start making sense, you've already taken the first step towards making the rest of FRM Quant much more manageable.
